The MacBook trackpad is the most-used input device on a MacBook — more so than on any other laptop, because Apple's trackpad is widely considered the best in the industry. When it fails, it's immediately noticeable. Whether it's Force Touch that's stopped providing haptic feedback, phantom clicks that make the cursor jump to random positions, or a trackpad that simply won't respond to touch, trackpad faults significantly affect productivity.

MacBook trackpad faults broadly split into four categories: battery pressure, liquid damage, Taptic Engine failure, and connection faults. Understanding which category applies determines the repair approach — and critically, whether the trackpad itself needs replacing or whether a cheaper upstream repair (battery swapping a swollen cell) resolves the fault entirely.

Swollen battery → phantom trackpad clicks is the most common MacBook trackpad fault and also the most misdiagnosed. MacBook batteries swell as they age (lithium polymer cells expand with electrolyte degradation). A swollen battery pushes upward against the top case, putting physical pressure on the underside of the trackpad. This pressure is interpreted as a continuous touch, causing the cursor to jump and click. The fix is battery replacement, not trackpad replacement — which is why a free diagnostic is important before ordering parts.

Force Touch failure means the Taptic Engine — the vibrating motor that simulates physical click feedback — has failed or is disconnected. Force Touch MacBooks (all models 2015 onwards) have no physical click mechanism; the "click" is entirely simulated. When Force Touch fails, the trackpad may still register finger movement (cursor moves) but there is no click feedback and clicks may not register. Taptic Engine repair or replacement from $149.

Phantom clicks and cursor jumping without a swollen battery are usually caused by liquid damage to the trackpad's flex cable or the trackpad circuit board. The trackpad communicates with the logic board through a thin flex ribbon cable; if liquid enters through the keyboard and runs down to the trackpad cable's routing path, the cable develops short circuits that produce erratic trackpad behaviour. Cable replacement from $99 if the cable alone is damaged; trackpad board replacement if the trackpad PCB itself was reached.

Trackpad not responding (cursor doesn't move, no touch detection) can be the trackpad assembly, the flex cable, or the logic board trackpad controller. The trackpad itself rarely fails without external cause (spill or physical damage). We diagnose by cable substitution and isolation during the free diagnostic.

Cracked trackpad glass occurs from direct impact (dropping the MacBook, placing something heavy on the open lid). The trackpad surface is Glass — it can crack. Surface cracks don't always affect function but can be sharp. Trackpad glass replacement from $149 on MacBook Air; from $179 on MacBook Pro.
