The iPhone XS launched in September 2018 as the successor to the landmark iPhone X. It kept the same design language — notch, OLED, no home button, Face ID — while upgrading the internals significantly: A12 Bionic chip (first 7nm mobile processor), dual 12MP OIS rear cameras, and IP68 water resistance (deeper and longer immersion than X's IP67). The XS Max introduced a 6.5-inch OLED screen — the largest iPhone screen at the time and the first "Max" naming that persists today.
At STS Roxburgh Park, we repair iPhone XS and XS Max regularly. Both models run iOS 16 (final supported version) and the A12 chip keeps them fast even years after release. Screen damage, battery wear, and back glass cracks are the most common issues we see.
iPhone XS and XS Max screens are Super Retina OLED panels — matching the high quality of the iPhone X screen but in two sizes (5.8" XS and 6.5" XS Max). The OLED difference from LCD is visible: true blacks, higher contrast, punchier colours. We source quality panels that preserve True Tone white balance, P3 wide colour, and proper brightness levels — important because low-grade OLED replacements show green tinting at low brightness.
Dual rear cameras (wide + 2× telephoto) are a key feature on the XS that wasn't present on the base iPhone X. The camera modules are independent from the screen. Camera repair (blurry images, cracked lens glass, focus failure) is handled separately and doesn't require screen removal.
Battery replacement is urgent on most XS units approaching 6 years old. The 2,658mAh cell (XS) or 3,174mAh cell (XS Max) degrades with charge cycles. We replace with OEM-specification cells. Apple's iOS battery health screen at Settings > Battery > Battery Health shows current capacity — anything below 80% warrants replacement.
Back glass replacement is common after drops. Like all iPhones from iPhone 8 onward, the XS has a glass back for wireless charging. The glass bonds to the stainless steel frame. Replacement restores appearance and keeps the Qi coil (inside the chassis) operational.
