The PlayStation 4 launched in 2013. At over 10 years old, the original PS4 and its successors — the PS4 Slim (2016) and PS4 Pro (2016) — are well into the prime repair window. Thermal paste applied at the factory a decade ago is now dried and cracked, causing the PS4's fan to run at maximum speed constantly and the console to shut down mid-game from thermal protection. The HDMI port — and the HDMI encoder chip that drives it — are the other failure category that brings PS4s into our workshop every week.
At STS Roxburgh Park, we repair all PS4 variants: the original fat PS4 (CUH-1000, CUH-1100, CUH-1200), the PS4 Slim (CUH-2000 onwards), and the PS4 Pro (CUH-7000 onwards). The internal layout differs between models — the PS4 Pro has a three-layer heatsink design that requires full disassembly to access the APU — but our technicians are familiar with all variants.
PS4 HDMI port repair is straightforward: the HDMI 1.4 connector on the PS4 main board is surface-mounted, and when pins break or the connector pulls partially off the board, it can be removed and replaced cleanly under a microscope. The port is a common failure from cable side-impacts or years of plug/unplug cycles. Cost from $79.
The PS4 HDMI encoder chip (labelled MN86471A on original models, slightly revised on later PS4 Slims) is a distinct failure from the port. When the encoder chip fails, you get no video output despite the power indicator lighting white — the console boots normally, but no image appears on the TV. HDMI encoder chip repair is a BGA rework job — the chip is heated, lifted, cleaned, and a new chip reflowed — from $99. We distinguish between port and encoder chip failure in the free diagnostic before quoting.
Thermal paste degradation is the single most common PS4 fault, particularly on original PS4s now over 10 years old. Standard thermal compound has a service life of 5–7 years; the original PS4 is well past that. Signs: fan runs at full speed from power-on, console shuts down after 30–60 minutes of play, jets of hot air from vents. A thermal service (new compound, heatsink clean, fan clean) from $69 typically reduces peak APU temperature by 15–25°C and eliminates the shutdown behaviour entirely.
Blue light of death (BLOD) — where the PS4 flashes the blue LED on startup and never progresses to white — has several root causes: power supply fault, APU fault, or a failed connection between the power board and main board. We diagnose which component has failed in the free check before quoting any repair. Many BLOD consoles are repairable; we'll tell you straight if the diagnosis points to an APU fault that makes repair uneconomical.
HDD → SSD upgrades are popular on the PS4: the original 500GB or 1TB 5400RPM HDD is noticeably slow loading PS4 games, and a 2.5-inch SATA SSD is a direct drop-in replacement. We transfer your data and rebuild the PS4 OS. From $79 (SSD cost separate or bring your own).
Our workshop is at Shop G69, 250 Somerton Road, Roxburgh Park. Open 7 days, 9am–5pm.
