The iMac is the Mac for professionals who value screen real estate — graphic designers, video editors, architects, and developers throughout Melbourne rely on them for daily creative work. The 24-inch M1 and M3 iMac and the discontinued Intel 27-inch 5K iMac both represent significant investments that are worth repairing when something goes wrong.
At STS Roxburgh Park, we repair all serviceable iMac models: iMac M3 (2023), iMac M1 (2021), Intel iMac 27-inch (2017–2020), and Intel iMac 21.5-inch. Apple's Genius Bar often declines iMac repair or quotes whole-board replacement at $800–$1,500. We repair at the component level for a fraction of that cost. Call ahead before bringing your iMac in — our workshop can accommodate large displays safely.
iMac logic board faults are the most complex and high-value repair we handle on these machines. The specific failure modes depend on the generation: Intel iMacs are prone to GPU solder joint failures (causing distorted display or no video), capacitor failures on the power supply section, and T2/EFI chip faults on later models. M1 and M3 iMacs are more reliable architecturally but can experience USB controller failures, Thunderbolt port damage, or NAND storage faults. We diagnose with professional microscopes and rework stations, repairing the specific faulty component rather than the whole board.
iMac screen repairs are complex because the display is glued to the aluminium chassis with adhesive strips and the front panel must be removed using heat and specialised suction handles. The 24-inch M1/M3 iMac uses a 4.5K Retina display; the 27-inch Intel uses a 5K Retina panel — both are premium displays that represent a significant portion of the iMac's value. We source OEM-specification panels for accurate colour reproduction, which is critical for creative professionals.
SSD upgrades are only possible on Intel iMac models with accessible storage. The 2019–2020 Intel iMac 27-inch and some 21.5-inch models have PCIe SSD slots or Fusion Drive configurations where the HDD component can be replaced with a larger SSD. M1 and M3 iMacs have soldered storage — we will tell you this upfront at the free diagnostic rather than charging for work that can't be done.
Data recovery is available for iMacs with failed or failing storage. If your iMac won't boot or is showing storage errors, we attempt data recovery before any repair work begins — your files are the priority.
Important logistics note: iMac displays are large and fragile. Please call us on (03) 8339 0014 before bringing your iMac in so we can confirm timing and ensure our workshop bench space is available to handle it safely.
