Lenovo ThinkPad is the gold standard business laptop. Built to a MIL-SPEC 810G durability rating, with spill-resistant keyboards, durable hinges, and a design philosophy that explicitly supports repairability — ThinkPad is the laptop brand that Apple wishes it could pretend doesn't exist. The X1 Carbon is the thinnest, lightest ThinkPad, weighing under 1.1kg with OLED display options. The E and T series are workhorses found on desks in every Melbourne professional services firm that isn't Apple-only.

Lenovo Legion is their gaming line, competing directly with ASUS ROG and MSI. IdeaPad and Yoga serve the consumer and student market — Yoga with its 360-degree fold-flat hinge. STS repairs every Lenovo product line, and ThinkPad is a particular strength: the design philosophy of the ThinkPad (repairability, separate keyboard units, documented service manuals) makes them very rewarding to work on.

ThinkPad screens are a pleasure to replace compared to most laptops. Lenovo publishes full hardware maintenance manuals for every ThinkPad model — the X1 Carbon, T14s, E14, L15, and X13 all have documented disassembly procedures. The display is secured with visible screws under thin rubber covers, not hidden behind adhesive and glue. ThinkPad E and T series IPS screens start from $139. The ThinkPad X1 Carbon OLED (stunning display on a 1kg machine) starts from $249 — still worth repairing given the X1 Carbon's price point.

ThinkPad keyboards are legendary in the laptop world — the key travel, the tactile bump, the TrackPoint red dot in the middle. They're also separately replaceable units on most ThinkPad models, which matters enormously when you spill coffee. On a MacBook, a liquid spill often means a $600+ top case replacement because the keyboard is glued to the chassis. On a ThinkPad E14 or T14, the keyboard is a separate replaceable unit: we pull the old one, install a new one, and the machine is back. From $119. The spill-resistant design also channels liquid away from the motherboard — many coffee-spill ThinkPads that come in still have a working motherboard. Bring it in quickly, power down immediately, and the odds are good.

Lenovo Legion gaming laptops — the Legion 5, 5 Pro, and 7 series — are the Lenovo answer to ASUS ROG and MSI. They pack AMD Ryzen 7/9 or Intel Core i9 processors and NVIDIA RTX GPUs into gaming chassis. Like all gaming laptops, thermal management is critical. The thermal paste between the CPU, GPU, and heat pipes is a consumable: after 2–3 years of regular gaming it dries out and cracks, and performance throttles as a result. Our Legion thermal service (from $89) refreshes the compound, cleans the fans, and clears the chassis vents. Regular gamers should do this every 2 years — it's the single best maintenance you can do for a gaming laptop.

The Yoga hinge mechanism — the one that allows a Yoga to fold flat into tablet mode or tent mode — is a more complex mechanism than a standard laptop hinge. It has a dual-hinge system with synchronised rotation, and it takes more stress than a standard hinge because it's articulated constantly. Yoga hinges fail in specific ways: the hinge screws strip, the hinge barrel cracks, or the synchronisation mechanism wears out. We replace broken Yoga hinges from $109 and check the display cable routing at the same time, since hinge failure often puts stress on the cable that runs through it.

STS at Roxburgh Park repairs Lenovo laptops for Melbourne's north and the broader city. ThinkPad repairs come from business users across Broadmeadows, Craigieburn, and the northern business parks. Legion gaming laptops from the student population around La Trobe Bundoora. IdeaPad and Yoga from families and students throughout the northern suburbs. ThinkPad is the one laptop where the owner is least likely to accept 'it's not worth repairing' — and we respect that. A well-maintained ThinkPad is a machine worth keeping for 7–10 years.
