A laptop that won't turn on is one of the most alarming device failures — especially when you need it urgently. The range of causes is wide: dead battery, a failed charging port, a loose RAM module, liquid damage, or a main board fault. Determining which applies requires a structured diagnostic, and the good news is that most are not main board failures — the cheaper causes are far more common.
The most important thing to avoid: don't repeatedly press the power button, don't leave it plugged in overnight hoping it will "fix itself", and don't attempt to open the laptop without the right tools. A failed charging IC can damage the battery with prolonged connection; a water-damaged board that's powered on will short further. Bring it to us promptly for a free diagnosis.
Dead battery is the most common cause of a laptop that seems completely dead. If the battery has been run to zero and left discharged for weeks or months, it may have dropped below the minimum voltage the charging circuit needs to detect it. Connect the charger and hold the power button for 30 seconds — some laptops will boot in low-power mode with a deeply discharged battery if given a long hold. If that doesn't work, the battery may need replacement before the laptop will respond at all. Battery replacement from $79.
Charging port failure (no power even when plugged in) means the charger is working but the laptop isn't receiving power through the port. USB-C ports on modern laptops fail with daily plug/unplug cycles. Barrel jack ports on older HP, Dell, and Lenovo models develop internal pin faults — especially the centre pin, which carries the positive terminal. Charging port replacement from $79.
RAM (memory) failure is a commonly overlooked cause of "won't turn on" faults. If one or both RAM modules fail, the laptop cannot complete POST (Power-On Self-Test) — it shows no display and may not boot at all, or may boot to beep codes. Reseating the RAM (free during diagnostic) or replacing failed modules (from $49) often restores full function immediately. We always test RAM first during any "won't turn on" diagnostic.
Power IC failure on the logic board means the chip responsible for distributing power to the CPU, RAM, and other components has failed. This is a board-level micro-soldering repair. Symptoms: charger is detected (LED light on, or Windows recognises the charger), but the laptop won't power on. From $149.
Liquid damage can cause a no-power fault when corrosion on the main board creates short circuits that prevent the power management circuit from activating. Ultrasonic board cleaning removes corrosion; damaged components are replaced. From $99 for cleaning assessment.
MacBook not turning on has its own diagnostic path — SMC reset, PRAM reset, external display test. We cover MacBook power faults on the MacBook not charging page as well.
