A MacBook that won't charge is usually an urgent problem — there's often a deadline involved, and the battery level ticking down while you troubleshoot adds real pressure. The good news: most MacBook charging faults have a straightforward cause that can be identified quickly with a free diagnostic, and most are resolved without needing to replace the main logic board.

MacBook charging architecture has changed significantly over the years. Older MacBook Pros and Airs used MagSafe 1 and MagSafe 2 connectors — magnetic charging ports where the connector pops off if the cable is snagged. Modern MacBooks (M1, M2, M3 chip) use USB-C for charging, with MagSafe 3 returning on MacBook Airs from M2 (2022) onwards. Each architecture has its own failure modes, but the diagnostic approach is the same: isolate the charger, test the port, test the battery, test the charging IC.

Charger and cable failure is the first thing to rule out. MagSafe cables are notorious for fraying — both at the connector end (where the cable curves against the port) and at the brick end. A frayed cable may still make intermittent contact but won't provide consistent charging. We can test your existing charger against a known-good one during the free diagnostic. If the charger is the fault, a replacement cable is far cheaper than a MacBook repair.

USB-C port repair is the most common hardware repair for non-charging M-chip MacBooks. On MacBook Air M1 and M2, USB-C is the only charging connection. These ports take repeated daily plug/unplug cycles — the connector eventually loosens (solder joints crack), causing intermittent or no charging. On the M1 and M2 MacBook Air, the USB-C ports are on a small daughterboard that can be replaced as a unit without micro-soldering the main board. Daughterboard replacement from $79. On MacBook Pro, USB-C is on the main board itself and requires micro-soldering.

MagSafe 3 port repair on MacBook Air M2/M3 involves the MagSafe board — a small separate board that the MagSafe connector attaches to. Liquid damage or physical stress can damage this board. Replacement from $89.

Charging IC failure (CD3217 on M-chip Macs, or ISL6259 on Intel Macs) is a board-level fault that prevents the MacBook from negotiating USB-C Power Delivery. The MacBook may show as "connected, not charging" or show no response at all when plugged in. Charging IC replacement requires micro-soldering under microscope — our board-level repair team handles this from $149.

Battery not detected or battery service warning: if macOS shows "Replace Now" in the battery menu, or the MacBook won't charge above a certain percentage and the battery percentage is inaccurate, the battery cells have degraded. MacBook battery replacement from $149 (MacBook Air M1) to $199 (MacBook Pro M-chip).

SMC reset is always our first step for any MacBook charging issue — a corrupted System Management Controller state can cause false "not charging" reports. We do this for free during the diagnostic before recommending any hardware repair.

Our workshop is at Shop G69, 250 Somerton Road, Roxburgh Park. Open 7 days, 9am–5pm.
