The iPhone 8, released in September 2017, was Apple's last traditional design iPhone before the radical shift to Face ID with the iPhone X. It uses a glass back for the first time — enabling Qi wireless charging — paired with Apple's A11 Bionic chip, which remains surprisingly capable for everyday tasks even today.
At STS Roxburgh Park, we repair iPhone 8 and 8 Plus regularly. Both models run iOS 16 (the final supported OS version) and remain solid devices for calls, messaging, and general use. At 7+ years old, the most common issues are battery degradation and screen damage, with back glass cracks being unique to this generation and the Plus model.
iPhone 8 and 8 Plus screens use Retina LCD — the same technology as iPhone 7, but with True Tone (automatic white balance matching ambient lighting) added. The screens look excellent and replacement panels are mature and well-priced. The 8 is 4.7 inches; the 8 Plus is 5.5 inches with a dual-camera Portrait Mode system.
Back glass replacement is one of the more distinctive repairs on iPhone 8. The glass back was introduced specifically to enable wireless charging — the Qi coil sits just inside, attached to the chassis. Cracked back glass is common after drops (glass is more fragile than aluminium). We bond a new glass panel to the chassis frame. Wireless charging continues to work normally after back glass replacement since the coil is not part of the glass itself.
Battery replacement is urgent on most iPhone 8 units at this age. The A11 chip's performance throttling (Apple's CPU throttling in response to degraded battery health) means an old battery makes the phone feel much slower than it should. A fresh battery from $59 restores full performance alongside the extended runtime.
The home button on iPhone 8 carries the same Touch ID pairing caveat as iPhone 7 — a third-party home button disables fingerprint recognition. We check the original button and ribbon cable first.
