Face ID problems are common — but they're also the area where customers get the most misleading promises. We'll be straight with you: some Face ID faults are repairable, and some genuinely are not, because of how Apple secured the system. Our job is to diagnose the real cause and tell you honestly which situation you're in, before you spend anything.
The free assessment identifies whether your Face ID fault is a fixable supporting-component issue (a flex cable, a sensor obstruction, a software glitch — often the case after a screen repair) or damage to the dot projector itself, which is cryptographically paired to your iPhone and can't be restored by any third party. No false promises.
What IS repairable: (1) Post-screen-repair Face ID failures — when a screen replacement disturbed or disconnected the proximity sensor / flood illuminator flex at the top of the screen. Reconnecting or repairing this flex often restores Face ID. From $49. (2) Obstruction or contamination — a screen protector covering the TrueDepth sensors, dirt, or a case interfering. Often free to resolve at the assessment. (3) Software causes — "Face ID unavailable" from an iOS glitch, resolved by restart, reset, or update. (4) A damaged flood illuminator or proximity sensor that isn't part of the cryptographically-paired dot projector — repairable in some cases. We diagnose precisely which component is at fault.
What ISN'T third-party repairable: damage to the dot projector — the core TrueDepth component that projects the infrared dot pattern Face ID reads. Apple pairs the dot projector to your iPhone's Secure Enclave at the factory for security. A replacement module from another iPhone won't work (it isn't paired), and Apple doesn't provide a re-pairing tool to third parties. If your dot projector is physically damaged (common after a hard drop directly on the TrueDepth area, or water damage to it), Face ID can only be addressed by Apple, typically via whole-device service. We'll tell you this honestly rather than taking your money for a repair that can't work.
"Move iPhone a little lower/higher" then fails: this message during a Face ID scan, ending in failure, can indicate a TrueDepth alignment or component fault. We assess whether it's a repairable flex/sensor issue or dot-projector related.
Why we're upfront about this: many repairers promise "Face ID repair" and either install a part that only restores the front camera (not Face ID), or take payment for work that can't restore Face ID. We don't. The assessment is free, and if your fault is the non-repairable kind, you'll leave knowing exactly where you stand — and we can still help with related repairs (front camera, screen, etc.) if you want them.
Front camera still works, Face ID doesn't: this is common and important — the front (selfie) camera and Face ID are different parts of the TrueDepth system. We can replace the front camera to restore selfies/FaceTime video (from $69) even when Face ID itself isn't recoverable. So you can regain the front camera function regardless.
iPhone models: Face ID applies to iPhone X, XR, XS, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 series (and iPad Pro). Touch ID models (iPhone SE, iPhone 8 and earlier, and the Touch-ID iPads) are a different system — see our other iPhone repair pages for Touch ID/home-button issues.
Our workshop is at Shop G69, 250 Somerton Road, Roxburgh Park. Open 7 days, 9am–5pm.
