A completely unresponsive iPhone is one of the most stressful device failures. No screen, no response to the power button, no charging indicator — it feels like the phone is dead. Most of the time, it isn't. The most common cause of an iPhone that won't turn on is a deeply discharged battery, which is resolved by charging for 15–30 minutes with a known-good charger before attempting to power on.
But when charging doesn't help and a force restart doesn't work, the fault is hardware. The good news: most hardware faults that cause an iPhone to not turn on are not logic board failures — they're battery, charging port, or display faults, all of which are same-day repairs at STS.
Force restart (try this first before bringing it in): on iPhone 8 and later, press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. On iPhone 7, hold Volume Down + Side button simultaneously for 10 seconds. On iPhone 6s and earlier, hold Home + Sleep/Wake for 10 seconds. If the Apple logo appears, the phone is fine — it had a software crash.
Dead battery — most common hardware cause. If the iPhone was left with a flat battery for weeks or months, the battery's protection circuit has shut it down to prevent deep discharge damage. The iPhone may not respond for the first 15–30 minutes of charging with a working charger. If it still doesn't respond after 30 minutes of charging with a known-good Apple-certified cable, the battery has failed. Battery replacement from $79 restores full function.
Charging port fault (won't charge, therefore won't turn on) — if the charging port is damaged, the battery runs flat and the phone appears dead. Test by connecting to a computer via USB and checking if iTunes/Finder detects the device (even briefly). If it detects, the board is alive but the port may be delivering insufficient power. Port repair from $69.
Black screen with the phone running (vibrates on notifications, plays audio) — this is a screen fault, not a power fault. The iPhone's logic board is running normally; only the display has failed. Screen replacement from $89.
Stuck Apple logo (boot loop) — the iPhone starts but gets stuck on the Apple logo and never reaches the home screen. Software cause: try force restart, then DFU restore via iTunes. Hardware cause (if DFU restore doesn't work or the phone fails repeatedly): usually NAND flash storage fault — requires board-level repair. From $149.
Water damage recovery — if the iPhone was wet and then stopped working, bring it in immediately. Don't try to charge it. We clean the logic board with ultrasonic cleaning to remove corrosion before it spreads. Success rate is significantly better when devices arrive within 24 hours of the water event.
Our workshop is at Shop G69, 250 Somerton Road, Roxburgh Park. Open 7 days, 9am–5pm.
