iPhone speaker problems range from a simple blocked grill (free to fix) to a damaged speaker assembly requiring replacement. The most common cause of sudden muffled iPhone audio is lint — the bottom speaker grill on the underside of the iPhone accumulates pocket lint over months of use, and a significant buildup physically blocks the sound. Before replacing the speaker, we clean the grill as part of the free diagnostic. Many speaker issues are resolved at no charge.
When the speaker has been physically damaged (from a drop, water exposure, or wear), replacement restores normal audio. On iPhone 12 and later, Apple integrated the bottom speaker with the Taptic Engine in a combined assembly — the same unit that produces the vibration motor and the speaker. Both are replaced together.
Bottom speaker replacement covers iPhone audio output for media, speakerphone, and ringtones. The bottom speaker is the main driver for stereo audio (paired with the earpiece for stereo). iPhone bottom speaker replacement from $69 for iPhone 11 and earlier, from $79 for iPhone 12 and later (Taptic Engine + speaker combined assembly). Same-day for all models.
Earpiece speaker replacement covers the top speaker used during phone calls and as the right stereo channel during media playback. The earpiece is a thin speaker strip behind the front mesh grill. Earpiece replacement from $69. The mesh grill that covers the earpiece is cleaned first — blocked grill is the most common earpiece fault and is free to fix.
iPhone 15 Pro Action Button note: iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max replaced the Ring/Silent switch with the Action Button. If your iPhone suddenly went silent, check whether the Action Button has been remapped to Mute (or a Focus mode that silences audio) — Settings → Action Button.
iPhone speaker grill cleaning: the bottom speaker grill and the earpiece mesh accumulate lint, pocket debris, and skin oils. We clean both with non-abrasive tools at the free diagnostic. If cleaning resolves the audio issue, there is no charge. Do not use metal pins or toothpicks on iPhone speaker grills — the membrane behind the grill is delicate and puncturing it causes permanent speaker damage.
Water-damaged iPhone speakers: water in the iPhone speaker assembly causes muffled or completely absent audio. The speaker driver is a paper or polymer cone membrane that deforms when saturated with liquid. Apple uses an internal water-expulsion feature in newer iPhones (a low-frequency tone that expels water from the speaker) — this can be triggered via the Shortcuts app. If water has been in the speaker for more than a few hours, the membrane may have physically deformed. Speaker replacement from $69.
