A console disc drive that won't read games, grinds, repeatedly ejects, or has a disc stuck inside is a common and repairable fault across PlayStation and Xbox. The disc drive is a mechanical component — laser, motor, gears, and loading mechanism — and any of these can wear or fail over years of use.
At STS, we repair disc drives on the PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, and Xbox One — from cleaning or replacing the laser, to fixing the loading mechanism, to safely removing a stuck disc. We diagnose the exact fault first so you only pay for what's needed.
Won't read discs (laser/optical pickup): the most common disc-drive fault. The laser lens (optical pickup) that reads the disc degrades over time or collects dust, so the console doesn't recognise discs, reads them slowly, or reads some discs but not others. We clean or replace the laser/optical pickup. Laser cleaning from $99; laser replacement from $129 (parts dependent). Applies to PS5, PS4, and Xbox.
PS5 disc drive faults: the PS5 disc drive is prone to a few specific issues — repeated auto-ejecting, grinding/clicking on load, and (on the PS5 Slim) the detachable drive not being recognised. These are usually a loading-mechanism/gear fault or a drive-board issue. PS5 disc drive repair from $129. On the PS5 Slim, the disc drive is detachable and sometimes needs re-pairing to the console after a fault — we handle that.
PS4 disc drive faults: the PS4 and PS4 Pro commonly develop auto-eject faults (the console beeps and ejects discs by itself, often due to the eject switch or power) and laser read failures. PS4 disc drive repair from $99 — laser, eject mechanism, or drive replacement.
Xbox disc drive faults: Xbox Series X and Xbox One disc drives develop grinding noises, won't-read faults, and stuck-disc problems. The Xbox One in particular is known for a "won't read disc + grinding" fault from a worn drive gear/belt. Xbox disc drive repair from $99 — laser, gears, or drive replacement.
Stuck disc removal: if a disc is jammed and won't eject, we remove it safely without scratching the disc or damaging the drive, then repair the eject fault that caused it. Stuck disc removal from $79 (plus eject-mechanism repair if needed). Don't force it — bring it in.
Full drive replacement: if the laser, motor, and mechanism are all worn beyond economical individual repair, we replace the complete drive assembly. Drive replacement from $149 depending on console and parts. Note: on PS5 and Xbox, disc drives can be paired to the console — we ensure the replacement is correctly paired so it works.
Disc drive vs digital: if you mostly play digital and rarely use discs, repair may be optional — but for physical-game collectors, disc buyers/sellers, and (on PS5) 4K Blu-ray movie playback, a working drive matters. We give honest advice at the diagnostic.
