A PS5 that won't turn on is one of the most frustrating console faults — particularly because Sony doesn't release repair documentation, and the PS5's internal structure is more complex than previous PlayStation generations. At STS, we repair PS5 power-on failures across all the common fault types: overheating from dust, power supply failure, HDMI port and retimer faults, and board-level issues.
The symptoms at startup tell most of the story: does it not respond at all? Does it flash blue then die? Does it start but show no picture? Does it shut down with a beep code? Each symptom points to a different fault. The free diagnostic at STS identifies which applies before any work begins.
PS5 dust cleaning and thermal paste replacement is the preventive repair that extends PS5 life and resolves overheating-related shutdowns. The PS5's large fan draws air through a heat sink duct that runs from one end of the console to the other. Over 2–3 years of daily use, this duct accumulates a thick layer of dust that progressively restricts airflow. A dust-clogged PS5 overheats during demanding games, shuts off as thermal protection, and struggles to restart until cooled. PS5 cleaning from $79 — we disassemble the console, clean the heat sink, fan, and duct, and replace the thermal paste on the APU. Recommended every 2 years.
PS5 power supply failure: the PS5 uses a single large power supply unit (PSU). When the PSU fails, the console may show no response at all, or the fan briefly spins and shuts off (the PSU can initiate but can't sustain load current). Power supply replacement from $129. Same-day if PSU is in stock.
HDMI port repair: the PS5's HDMI 2.1 port is a known failure point. The port pins are delicate, and a cable pulled at an angle or a trip-over incident can bend the internal pins or crack the solder joints. A damaged HDMI port = PS5 turns on but no picture. HDMI port replacement from $99 at STS — same-day or next-day.
HDMI retimer chip replacement: the HDMI retimer IC (a small chip on the PS5 motherboard that processes the HDMI 2.1 signal) is a known PS5 weakness — it can fail even without physical HDMI damage. A failed retimer causes the same symptom as HDMI port damage: console starts, no video output. HDMI retimer replacement from $149, 2–3 days (SMD micro-soldering).
Board-level faults: if the above repairs don't apply (power supply works, HDMI port is intact, console has been dust cleaned), the fault is on the main board — power management IC, RAM, or APU issue. We perform board-level diagnosis and micro-soldering repair where possible. Assessment from $99.
