The Xbox 360 launched in 2005 and became one of the most-loved — and most-failure-prone — consoles ever made. The original "fat" 360 is infamous for the Red Ring of Death: three flashing red lights caused by the GPU and CPU solder joints cracking under a cooling system that simply ran too hot. Microsoft eventually extended the warranty to three years specifically for RROD, but two decades on, those consoles are long out of warranty and the failures are still happening to units pulled out of storage.
At STS Roxburgh Park, the Xbox 360 is a board-level repair specialty. We do proper BGA reball work — not just a quick heat-gun reflow that fails again in months — on the original 360, and we service the later Slim (S) and E models for disc, HDMI, and thermal faults. If your 360 shows three red lights, an E74 error, won't read discs, or overheats and shuts down, we can almost always bring it back.
Red Ring of Death (RROD) repair is the signature Xbox 360 job. The three red lights mean a general hardware fault, and on the original 360 the cause is nearly always cracked solder under the GPU (and sometimes the CPU). The durable fix is a reball: we remove the chip on a BGA rework station, clean off the failed lead-free solder, reball with fresh leaded solder (which tolerates the 360's heat-cycling far better), reseat the chip, and replace the dried thermal compound and often the inadequate factory heatsink shims. RROD reball from $129. We do not recommend a bare reflow — it can revive a console for a few weeks but the same joints fail again. A reball is the lasting repair.
E74 error (single red light, lower-right, with the E74 code) is the close cousin of RROD. It usually points to the HANA/ANA scaler chip beside the GPU, or the GPU joints themselves. The repair is the same family of BGA rework — reball or reseat the affected chip with fresh solder and new thermal compound. From $129.
Disc drive repair covers the original 360's four drive brands (Hitachi, Samsung, BenQ, LiteOn) and the Slim/E drives. A worn laser (disc spins but won't read) is replaced from $89; a jammed tray or eject fault is repaired from $79. Because the drive is firmware-paired to the motherboard, a full drive swap requires transferring the drive key — we handle this correctly so the console accepts the drive.
HDMI port repair (on HDMI-equipped 360s) replaces a port that has pulled away from the board, causing no or intermittent video. Micro-soldering, from $79.
Thermal service is worthwhile on any 360 even without a current fault — after 15+ years the thermal compound is bone-dry. New compound and a fan/heatsink clean from $69 lowers operating temperature and reduces the chance of future solder failure. We include fresh compound with every reball.
