The Xbox One launched in 2013. At over 10 years old, the original Xbox One and its successors — the Xbox One S (2016) and Xbox One X (2017) — are solidly in the prime repair window. Thermal compound applied at the factory a decade ago has dried and cracked. The original Xbox One runs its AMD APU particularly hot by design (28nm process, high TDP) — after years of use, the paste degrades and the console starts thermal-shutting down or running the fan at full speed continuously.

HDMI is the other common failure category. The Xbox One's size and the weight of a typical HDMI cable can stress the port over years of use. And disc drive issues — unread discs, non-ejecting discs, grinding noises — are predictably common on drives now handling thousands of load cycles.

At STS Roxburgh Park, we repair all Xbox One variants: the original fat Xbox One (1540, 1541), the Xbox One S (1681), and the Xbox One X (1787). Internal layouts differ between models but our technicians know all three.

Xbox One HDMI port repair replaces the soldered HDMI connector on the main board. The original Xbox One is particularly susceptible to port damage — its large chassis means HDMI cables hang at an angle that stresses the port over time. The port can pull partially off the board, causing no display or intermittent display output. Port replacement requires micro-soldering and takes 1–2 days. From $79.

The Xbox One also uses an HDMI encoder chip (similar to the PS4's MN86471A) that can fail independently of the port. Symptoms: the console powers on and operates normally (you can hear the dashboard sounds if you have optical audio), but there is no video output. HDMI encoder chip repair is a BGA-level rework job from $99. The free diagnostic distinguishes port fault from encoder fault.

Thermal compound replacement is the most common Xbox One preventive service. The original Xbox One's AMD APU runs at temperatures that stressed even new thermal compound; after 10 years, replacement is overdue on every console that hasn't been serviced. Symptoms: fan audible from across the room, console shutting down after 30–90 minutes of gaming, hot air jets from the vents. Thermal service from $69 — new compound, heatsink clean, fan clean — typically reduces APU temperature by 15–20°C.

Disc drive repair covers three main faults: (1) disc inserted but not recognised — the laser has degraded or failed, laser replacement from $89; (2) disc eject fault — the motor or tray mechanism has jammed, from $79; (3) disc grinding — the spindle motor or disc clamp is worn, from $79. The Xbox One uses paired drives — the drive's security certificate is paired to the console. We handle the pairing process correctly.

Hard drive → SSD upgrades improve the Xbox One's notoriously slow loading times. The original 500GB or 1TB 5400RPM HDD can be replaced with a 2.5-inch SATA SSD or a larger HDD. Xbox One games load significantly faster from an SSD. Data transfer and OS rebuild included. From $79 (SSD cost additional or bring your own).

Our workshop is at Shop G69, 250 Somerton Road, Roxburgh Park. Open 7 days, 9am–5pm.
