The PlayStation 3 launched in 2006 with the powerful but hot-running Cell processor and RSX graphics chip. Like the Xbox 360 of the same era, the original Fat PS3 is prone to a solder-joint failure — the Yellow Light of Death (YLOD) — where the console flashes yellow then red and refuses to boot. Two decades on, Fat PS3s pulled out of storage are still YLOD-ing, and owners want them back for the game libraries and saves that modern PlayStations cannot play.

At STS Roxburgh Park, the PS3 is a board-level repair specialty. We do proper BGA reball work on the Fat PS3 — not a temporary heat-gun reflow — and we service the Slim and Super Slim models for Blu-ray, HDMI, and thermal faults. If your PS3 shows the yellow light, won't read discs, or has no video, we can almost always bring it back.

Yellow Light of Death (YLOD) repair is the signature PS3 job. The console flashes green, blinks yellow, then flashes red — caused by cracked solder under the Cell CPU or RSX GPU on the Fat PS3. The durable fix is a reball: we lift the chip on a BGA rework station, clean off the failed solder, reball with fresh solder that tolerates the PS3's heat-cycling, reseat the chip, and replace the dried thermal compound. YLOD reball from $129. We don't recommend a bare reflow — it can revive a console briefly but the same joints fail again. A reball is the lasting repair.

Blu-ray drive repair covers the common "won't read discs" and "won't load/eject" faults. We replace worn lasers (KES-400A, KES-450A, or KEM-410 depending on model) from $89, or repair the loading gears and motor from $79. The PS3 Blu-ray drive is married to the motherboard, so a full drive replacement requires transferring the original drive's controller board or re-pairing the drive — a step we handle correctly so the console reads discs again.

HDMI port repair replaces a port that has pulled away from the board, causing no video or intermittent picture. Micro-soldering, from $79.

Thermal service is worthwhile on any PS3, even without a current fault. After 15+ years the factory thermal compound is bone-dry, which is exactly what leads to YLOD. New compound and a fan/heatsink clean from $69 lowers operating temperature and reduces the chance of solder failure. Fresh compound is included with every reball.

Hard drive replacement and data transfer are straightforward on all PS3 models — the 2.5-inch SATA drive is user-accessible, and we can fit a larger HDD or an SSD and transfer your saves and data where the original drive is still readable. From $69.

Our workshop is at Shop G69, 250 Somerton Road, Roxburgh Park. Open 7 days, 9am–5pm.
