Laptop charging ports fail in two ways: mechanical loosening from years of cable plug-in/out cycles, and electrical damage from cables being pulled at angles or tripped over. The result is the same — the laptop charges intermittently, only at specific cable angles, or not at all. In most cases, the charging port can be repaired or replaced at STS same-day.
The repair complexity depends on how the charging port is connected to the motherboard. On most modern HP, Dell, Lenovo, and ASUS laptops, the USB-C charging port is on a dedicated daughterboard connected to the motherboard via a ribbon cable — straightforward replacement. On some ultrabooks and all MacBook Pros, the USB-C port is soldered directly to the logic board, requiring micro-soldering.
HP laptop charging port repair: most HP Pavilion, HP Envy, and HP EliteBook laptops have the USB-C charging port on a daughterboard accessible from the bottom panel. HP barrel connector (round plug) laptops — older HP Pavilion, HP ProBook — have the DC connector on a small board or soldered to the motherboard. HP USB-C port from $79. HP barrel connector from $79. What not to do: don't force a USB-C cable into a port with bent pins — bent pins can cause further damage and potentially short the board. If you see bent pins in the USB-C port, stop using it and bring it in. Pin straightening is sometimes possible but port replacement is usually more reliable.
