An iPad that won't charge is particularly inconvenient — iPads are used for long viewing sessions, work, and education where battery life is critical. The most common iPad charging fault — by a significant margin — is lint in the Lightning or USB-C port. iPads stored in bags and on tables accumulate pocket lint in their charging ports, and over time this compresses into a plug that prevents the cable from seating. This is free to fix at STS.

Port lint cleaning is the most common fix. iPads used in bags and pockets accumulate lint in their ports over months of use. A compressed lint plug prevents the cable from connecting properly. We clean Lightning and USB-C ports with specialised tools during the free diagnostic at no charge. In many cases, charging is immediately restored. Don't attempt cleaning with toothpicks or metal objects — the pins inside Lightning ports bend easily.

Lightning port repair on older iPads (iPad 9th gen and earlier, iPad Air 3, iPad mini 5) covers the full range of charging faults: worn port with intermittent connection, physically damaged port from a drop, or a port that passes charge only at specific cable angles. USB-C port repair on newer iPads (iPad Pro, iPad Air 4/5, iPad mini 6, iPad 10th gen) is a more involved repair — the USB-C port on iPad Pros is soldered to the logic board and carries both charging and data/Thunderbolt signals. A worn USB-C port means intermittent charging and data transfer. Port repair from $79.

Battery replacement on an iPad addresses degraded battery capacity. iPads used in school, business, or by children often have high charge cycles. A 3–4 year old iPad used daily may have 400–500 charge cycles, bringing it below 80% capacity — noticeably shorter usage time. Battery replacement from $89 (iPad mini), $109 (iPad Air), $129 (iPad Pro 11"), $149 (iPad Pro 12.9"). Same-day in most cases.

iPad Pro fast charging notes: the iPad Pro supports USB-C Power Delivery fast charging with a compatible 20W+ charger and USB-C cable. Charging slowly or "Not Charging" with the wrong charger is expected behaviour — the tablet draws more power than a 5W phone charger delivers. Use the iPad Pro's own charger (20W or 30W) for normal charging speeds.
