"People can't hear me on calls" is one of the most common iPhone complaints — and often the cheapest to fix. The bottom microphone sits right next to the charging port and accumulates pocket lint that muffles or blocks it. Before assuming the mic is broken, we clean the grill at the free diagnostic — and in many cases that restores it at no charge.
When a microphone is genuinely damaged (from a drop, water, or a previous repair), replacement is a same-day fix. iPhones have three microphones — bottom, front, and rear — each used by different apps, which lets us pinpoint exactly which one is faulty.
How iPhone microphones work: iPhones have three mics. The bottom mic (next to the charging port) handles normal handset phone calls. The front mic (near the earpiece/front camera) handles speakerphone, FaceTime, Siri, and video calls. The rear mic (near the rear cameras) captures audio for rear-camera video. Knowing which app fails tells us which mic to fix — and lets us confirm the repair worked.
Mic grill cleaning — often the free fix: the bottom microphone grill, sitting beside the charging port, accumulates compacted pocket lint that muffles or blocks your voice. We clean it with proper tools at the free diagnostic. If cleaning restores clear audio, there's no charge. Don't poke the mic hole with pins — the membrane behind it is delicate.
Bottom microphone replacement: if cleaning doesn't fix it, the bottom mic is damaged (drop or water). On most iPhones the bottom mic is part of the charging-port (Lightning/USB-C) flex assembly, so replacement also refreshes the charging connector. Bottom mic replacement from $69. Same day.
Front microphone / earpiece flex: the front mic is integrated with the earpiece and proximity sensor flex at the top of the screen. If speakerphone, FaceTime, or Siri can't hear you (but normal calls are fine), the front mic is the issue. Front mic/earpiece flex repair from $69. This is also a common casualty of poorly-done screen repairs — we fix those too.
Rear microphone: used for rear-camera video audio. If your videos have no sound (or muffled sound) but calls are fine, the rear mic is faulty. Rear mic repair from $69.
Water-damaged microphones: water in a mic causes muffled or absent audio. iPhones have a water-expulsion capability for speakers (via Shortcuts), but mics may need replacement if the membrane was affected. After water exposure we also recommend a board check — see our iPhone water damage service. Mic replacement from $69.
Software checks first: before any hardware work, we rule out software — a restart, checking no app has blocked mic access (Settings → Privacy → Microphone), removing a case/protector covering the mic, and testing in Voice Memos. If it's software or a blocked grill, you may not need a paid repair at all. We're honest about that.
