A TV that won't turn on isn't necessarily dead. In the majority of cases it's a single failed component — a power board, a blown capacitor, or a board that's stopped initialising — and the repair cost is a fraction of a replacement TV.
The first thing to check: does your TV have a standby light? A red or white indicator light means the TV is receiving power and the standby circuit is alive. That narrows the fault significantly. No light at all points to a power board or fuse fault. Standby light present but TV won't start points to a board-level startup fault — often the T-con board or main board. Both scenarios are diagnosable and usually repairable.
Why TVs won't turn on — and what actually fails: modern TVs have four main boards — the power supply board, the main board (with the CPU and smart TV software), the T-con board (which drives the LCD panel), and the backlight driver. Any of these can prevent the TV from starting, but the failure patterns are different and diagnosable.
Power board failure is the most common cause of a completely dead TV. The power board contains high-voltage capacitors, MOSFETs, and voltage regulators. Capacitors are the most common point of failure — they bulge or leak visually, or fail electrically without visible signs. A tech can check output voltages directly to confirm a power board fault in minutes. Blown capacitors from $99. Full power board replacement from $149.
Blown fuse on the power board is a quick fix that's often overlooked. Power surges, lightning, or a connected device fault can blow the board-mounted fuse. Fuse replacement is fast and cheap — if the underlying cause was a transient surge and not a failing board component, the TV often works perfectly after fuse replacement.
T-con board failure causes the TV to appear to start (you may hear audio, the standby light goes off) but the screen stays black or shows a white flash then cuts off. The T-con board drives the LCD panel's column and row drivers. It sits separately from the main board and can be replaced without touching the main board. T-con board replacement from $129.
Main board failure is less common than power board failure but harder to diagnose definitively without testing a known-good replacement board. Signs of main board failure include: TV gets to the brand logo screen then freezes, TV is stuck in a boot loop, HDMI inputs don't respond, smart TV software won't load. Main board replacement from $199. Some main board faults are firmware-related and can be resolved without board replacement.
Samsung TV not turning on: Samsung is by far the most common brand we see for power-on failures. Samsung TVs from 2016–2023 develop power board capacitor failure as the dominant fault mode. Samsung uses a blink-code system on the standby LED — the number of blinks before a pause indicates which board has failed. Tell our techs the blink count when you bring your TV in. Samsung power board repair from $149.
LG TV won't turn on: LG TVs also use blink codes. The most common LG power-on fault we see is a failed power board in their mid-range LED series. LG OLED power-on faults can be more complex — OLED panels have their own power supply circuit separate from the main power board. LG power board repair from $149.
Sony, Hisense, TCL, Kogan, and Panasonic: all of these brands use similar power board architectures. Hisense and TCL parts are generally well-stocked and affordable to replace. Kogan TVs sometimes use custom power boards where replacement parts require sourcing — we assess availability at diagnostic. Sony Bravia power faults are usually power board or main board related and parts are readily available for most models.
