A TV screen that's gone completely dark — or very dim — while sound still works is almost always a backlight failure. It's one of the most common TV faults, it's often misdiagnosed as a dead TV, and it's almost always repairable at a fraction of the cost of a replacement screen or a new TV.
The quick test: in a dark room, shine a bright phone torch at the TV screen while it's switched on. If you can see a faint image appearing where the torch hits the glass, your TV's picture circuitry is completely fine. The image is being generated correctly — the backlight behind the LCD panel isn't illuminating it. That's a repairable backlight fault, not a dead TV.
How LED backlights work and why they fail: all modern LCD TVs (everything that isn't OLED) use an LED backlight array — dozens or hundreds of LEDs arranged in strips or clusters behind the LCD panel. The LCD modulates the light to produce the picture; the LEDs provide the white light source. LEDs have a finite lifespan, and after 5–10 years of daily use, individual LEDs in the strips begin to fail. When enough LEDs fail on one strip, that zone of the screen goes dark. The TV's internal circuitry often detects the fault and shuts down the entire backlight rather than running on a partial array.
LED strip replacement is the repair: we disassemble the TV to access the backlight assembly behind the LCD, identify which strips have failed (or replace all strips for long-term reliability), install new LED strips of the correct specification for the model, and reassemble. The LCD panel, main board, T-con board, and speakers are all untouched. This is a full repair, not a band-aid.
Samsung LED backlight faults are the most common we see. Samsung TVs from 2017–2022 are particularly prone to backlight strip failure after 5–7 years. Samsung uses direct-lit and edge-lit configurations depending on the model and size — the repair approach differs. Samsung QLED uses a different backlight technology (quantum dot LED) — some QLED backlight faults are strip-related, others are driver-board related. Samsung backlight from $149.
LG LED TV backlight replacement: LG's budget and mid-range LED TVs (non-OLED) develop backlight failures on similar timescales to Samsung. LG NanoCell TVs use a slightly different LED configuration. LG OLED TVs do not have LED backlights — "dark screen" on an OLED is a different fault. LG LED backlight from $149.
Sony Bravia backlight repair: Sony's X-series and W-series LED TVs develop backlight faults from 2019–2023 models onwards after 4–6 years. Sony uses both edge-lit and full-array backlights depending on the model. Sony backlight from $149.
Hisense, TCL, Kogan, and other budget brands often use the same LED strip suppliers as major brands but with tighter tolerances. Repairs are usually more affordable for these brands due to simpler backlight configurations. From $149 for common 50"–55" models.
