A laptop that won't connect to WiFi is frustrating but usually quick to fix — and often it's a software/driver issue rather than a hardware fault. The most common cause is a corrupted or outdated wireless driver (frequently after a Windows update), followed by a failing wireless card or a loose internal antenna.

At STS, we diagnose the actual cause first — whether it's a driver, the WiFi card, the antenna, or a network issue that isn't the laptop at all. Many WiFi problems are resolved same-day with a driver fix; hardware faults (card or antenna) are straightforward repairs on most laptops.

WiFi driver and software repair: the most common laptop WiFi fault. A corrupted, outdated, or missing wireless driver — often introduced by a Windows update — stops the laptop connecting, makes the WiFi option disappear, or causes constant dropouts. We reinstall the correct manufacturer driver, reset the Windows network stack, and verify a stable connection. Driver/software repair from $69, often resolved within an hour. If your WiFi broke after a Windows update, this is very likely the fix.

WiFi card replacement: if the wireless card itself has failed (no WiFi adapter detected, hardware error, or intermittent failure not fixed by drivers), we replace it. Most Windows laptops have a removable M.2 wireless card accessible via the bottom panel. WiFi card replacement from $69 including the card. We can also upgrade to a faster Wi-Fi 6/6E card while we're in there, for better speed and range, if your laptop supports it.

WiFi antenna repair: the WiFi antenna wires run from the wireless card, through the hinge, up to the top of the screen bezel (for the best signal). These thin wires can come loose from the card or break at the hinge, causing very weak signal or dropouts even though the card is fine. Antenna repair/reconnection from $79. This is a common cause of "my laptop has weak WiFi but my phone is fine on the same network."

Bluetooth issues: the WiFi card usually also handles Bluetooth — so if both WiFi and Bluetooth are failing together, it points to the wireless card or driver. We fix Bluetooth connectivity issues alongside WiFi (same card, same diagnosis).

MacBook WiFi issues: MacBooks have the WiFi soldered to the logic board, so it can't be simply swapped like a Windows M.2 card. MacBook WiFi problems are usually driver/macOS-related (resolved by resetting network settings, NVRAM/SMC, or a macOS fix) or, less commonly, an antenna or board-level issue. Is it the laptop or the network? Part of the free diagnostic is determining whether the fault is actually your laptop or your home network/router. If other devices also struggle on the same WiFi, the issue may be the router or NBN connection (not something we charge to "fix" on the laptop). We tell you honestly — sometimes the answer is a router restart or replacement, not a laptop repair.
