"No signal" on a TV's HDMI input is one of the most common TV complaints we see — and it has a much wider range of causes than most people expect. Before assuming the TV's HDMI port is broken, it's worth ruling out the source device and the HDMI cable, which are the two most common culprits. But when those are confirmed fine and the TV still won't recognise the connected device, the problem is usually the HDMI port itself.
TV HDMI faults are overwhelmingly mechanical or solder-related. Modern TVs don't use separate "HDMI chips" in the way older electronics did — the HDMI controller is integrated into the main processor or a dedicated HDMI bridge IC. Physical damage to the port connector, cracked solder joints under the port, or a damaged HDMI bridge IC are the failure modes we see in practice.
Bent or damaged HDMI pins are the most common physical fault. HDMI connectors are relatively fragile — if a cable is inserted at an angle, yanked out sharply, or the TV is moved with a cable plugged in, the internal pins can bend. A bent pin prevents the data connections from making contact, so the TV receives no signal. In many cases, pins can be carefully straightened; in others, the entire port needs replacement. Port repair or replacement from $79.
Cracked solder joints under the HDMI port cause intermittent HDMI — the port looks fine physically, the cable seats properly, but signal cuts in and out depending on the cable angle or the TV's position. This happens because repeated cable insertion/removal applies micro-torque stress to the solder joints attaching the port to the PCB; over time those joints develop micro-fractures. Re-flowing or re-soldering the HDMI port restores reliable signal. From $79.
HDMI board failure on TVs that use a discrete HDMI board (a separate small PCB that the HDMI ports connect to, which then connects to the main board via ribbon cable) means the board can be replaced as a unit rather than requiring micro-soldering. This is more common on larger-format TVs (65"+ Samsung, LG) where the HDMI ports are on a side-mounted input board. Board replacement from $99.
Specific brand notes: Samsung TVs from 2018 onwards use One Connect Box input modules on some QLED models — HDMI ports are on the One Connect Box, not the TV. The One Connect Box can be replaced as a unit. LG OLED TVs from 2019+ have HDMI 2.1 ports on the main board that are occasionally damaged by improperly grounded HDMI cables (static discharge). Sony TVs have a common HDMI controller IC fault on some X series models from 2020–2022 where HDMI 2.1 ports fail — this is a known board-level fault requiring IC repair.
