A TV with no picture is one of the most common — and most commonly repairable — TV faults. The key insight: if you have sound but no picture, the TV's electronics are largely working and the fault is usually the backlight (the LED lighting behind the screen) or a board fault — not the expensive LCD/OLED panel itself. These are economical repairs.
The simple diagnostic that tells us most of the story is the torch test: shining a bright light on the dark screen to see if a faint picture is still there. If it is, the backlight has failed and the TV is very much worth repairing. At STS, we diagnose the exact cause before quoting.
Backlight (LED) repair — the most common no-picture fault: modern LED TVs use strips of LEDs behind the LCD panel to illuminate the picture. Over time — particularly in TVs run at high brightness — individual LEDs fail. Because the LEDs are wired in series strings, one failed LED can darken an entire section or cut the whole backlight. Symptoms: black screen with working sound, picture visible under torch light, or picture that shows briefly then goes black. LED backlight strip replacement from $149 (32"–43"), $179 (50"–55"), $219 (65"), $279 (75"+). We open the TV, replace the failed strips, and reassemble.
T-CON board repair: the T-CON (Timing Controller) board sits between the main board and the panel, controlling how the image is drawn. A failed T-CON causes: no picture (black screen), distorted picture, double images, negative/inverted colours, or solarised colours. T-CON board replacement from $99. Often a quick repair once diagnosed.
Power board repair: if the TV is completely dead (no standby light, no sound, no picture), the power board has usually failed — commonly from blown capacitors. Power board repair from $99 (capacitor replacement) or board replacement where needed. Power board faults are very commonly repairable and economical.
Main board repair: the main board (mainboard/motherboard) handles inputs, processing, and smart TV functions. A main board fault can cause no picture, no sound, no HDMI inputs, or boot loops. Main board repair or replacement from $129 depending on the fault and parts.
Brand coverage: we repair no-picture faults on Samsung, LG, Sony, Hisense, TCL, Panasonic, Kogan, and all major TV brands. Samsung and LG panels and boards are well-supported; Hisense and TCL parts are increasingly available; Sony boards are sourced as needed.
When a TV isn't worth repairing: if the LCD/OLED panel itself is cracked or has internal damage (lines, large dark patches not caused by backlight), the panel replacement cost usually exceeds the TV's value — we'll advise honestly at the diagnostic. Backlight and board faults, however, are almost always economical to repair.
