A laptop that runs hot, has a constantly loud fan, or shuts down during demanding tasks is overheating — and it's both a performance problem and a long-term risk to the hardware. Sustained overheating causes thermal throttling (the laptop deliberately slows down to reduce heat), and over time can damage the CPU/GPU or cause solder joint failures.

The good news: laptop overheating is almost always caused by restricted cooling from accumulated dust and dried-out thermal paste — and both are straightforward to fix. A thermal service restores cooling, quiets the fan, stops the shutdowns, and brings back full performance. It's one of the most worthwhile maintenance services for any laptop 2+ years old.

Dust cleaning and thermal paste replacement — the core overheating fix: every laptop pulls air through its cooling system, and over years this deposits dust on the heat sink fins and fan. A dust-clogged heat sink can't dissipate heat, so the laptop runs hot and the fan ramps up (loud). At the same time, the thermal paste between the processor and heat sink dries out and loses effectiveness. Our thermal service (from $89) disassembles the laptop, thoroughly cleans the heat sink, fan, and air channels, and applies fresh high-quality thermal paste to the CPU and GPU. Result: lower temperatures (often 10–20°C cooler), a quieter fan, no more throttling, and no thermal shutdowns.

Fan replacement: if the fan itself is failing — grinding, rattling, clicking, or not spinning — it needs replacement, not just cleaning. A worn fan bearing or a seized fan causes overheating because there's no airflow at all. Laptop fan replacement from $89 (including the fan). Gaming laptops with dual fans from $119. We confirm whether it's a dust issue (clean) or a fan fault (replace) at the diagnostic.

Gaming laptop thermal service: gaming laptops (ASUS ROG, Acer Nitro/Predator, MSI, Lenovo Legion, HP OMEN, Razer) generate far more heat than standard laptops and have more complex cooling — dual fans, multiple heat pipes, and sometimes vapour chambers. They benefit most from regular thermal service. Gaming laptop thermal service from $99 (includes thorough multi-fan cleaning and premium thermal paste, sometimes thermal pads on VRMs/memory). Recommended annually for heavy gamers.

MacBook thermal service: MacBooks (especially Intel MacBook Pro models) are prone to overheating and loud fans under load. The Intel MacBook Pro 15"/16" in particular runs hot with demanding apps. MacBook thermal service from $99 — dust clean and thermal paste. Note: M1/M2/M3 MacBooks run much cooler and the Air models are fanless, so overheating complaints on Apple Silicon Macs are usually software-related (runaway processes) rather than thermal hardware.

Thermal throttling explained: when a laptop overheats, the CPU/GPU automatically reduces its clock speed to generate less heat — this is "thermal throttling." The laptop feels slow, games stutter, and video stutters, even though the hardware is capable of more. Restoring cooling (dust clean + paste) eliminates throttling and restores full performance. If your laptop is both slow AND hot with a loud fan, thermal throttling is likely the cause.
